Why?

Why am I a photographer?

Simply put, I suck at expressing myself in all other art forms.
I cannot draw or paint to save my life.
It takes a lot out of me to write and craft, but it comes out decent.
Photography comes naturally with ease.

I remember in my high school ceramics class I was to create a bowl.
This was my bowl:
My
I was asked what grade I felt I deserved, and I, without hesitation said and A!
Puzzled, my teacher told me to explain why.
I began… Its not technically perfect but it is perfect to me and I like it which is all that matters.
He explained the directions were to create a smooth even bowl, which this clearly was not.
(I have never followed directions very well.)
I did start out following the directions and I did at one point have a smooth even bowl, and then it folded and fell over.
I could have smashed it up and started over but I didn’t.
It was unique, it said something about me.
I made this roughly 12 years ago and it has moved with me across the ocean and back.  It is a reminder for many things. I also did get the A I felt I deserved. 🙂

Photography has rules, but photography is limitless and forgiving.
It took a lot of practice and soul searching and personally willing to put my all into every shot to be where I am.
I am a very closed person, I do not show my feelings, and certainly keep my emotions locked up pretty tight.

Completely contradictory in what I aim to capture every single time I pick my my camera.
EMOTION
I want all the emotion to show, I want the view to FEEL the image not just look at it.
During my MFA Photography program I was unconsciously forced me to learn about myself, understand who I am, and what I wanted to achieve.
One class in particular caused me to question why I chose to pursue this degree in the first place and where I wanted to go in life.
I stared at my bowl on my desk and realized I needed to go deeper and become vulnerable; and get over my fear of showing people that side of me.

I chose to be a photographer and use photography as an outlet because I don’t have to follow directions.
I can be authentically me every single time. Feeding my soul each time I pick up the camera.

Its been a while, but this raw personal post is a damn good blog circle come back!

Mountain Top Maternity | Northern Utah Photographer

Mountains are gorgeous aren’t they?
Growing up in Northern Utah, surrounded by the Rockies and the Wasatch Front which were constantly snow capped I never truly appreciated them.
We used the mountains more so for directions; “head towards the mountains and then turn left” is usually how it went.
I don’t care for snow, therefore I never went skiing or snowboarding. But, we’d often take a drive up the canyon to unwind or go camping for the weekend throughout the summer.
But, I never truly appreciated the Mountains and their beauty.
Then I moved away, to a tropical island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean (Okinawa) and the largest “mountain” we had was more so a hill.
I missed looking up at the enormous amounts of earth touching the sky.
I missed the drives up and over or through them.
I missed the Mountains.
I missed them for 7 years.
Then we moved to Tucson Arizona, and we had mountains! Kinda.
They are in no-way a comparison to Utah’s Mountains, but they are enormous amounts of earth sometimes touching the sky.

Maternity on the Mountain

When Betsy told me she was expecting again I beamed at the thought of heading up the mountain for a breathtaking session!
Selfishly I needed that mountain experience, however it was also fitting since her first maternity session was at the beach!
Mount Lemmon was nothing short of magnificent! It was just the dose of adventure I longed for!
It really brought this moment into perspective with the climb, the view, the feeding of the soul – very much like pregnancy, birth, and the new adventure of raising the tiny little human you just grew inside of you like a rock-star!

Do you need that soul feeding adventure too?
Lets go! Maternity, Couples, Families, whatever session you want, the Mountains are always calling!

Utah Family Photographer – Desert

If there is one thing we know for sure, Tucson has an unlimited supply of desert. You either love it or you hate, or your like me and tolerate it for various reasons. I do LOVE it for its colors, light, and simplicity. I hate it because it houses snakes. I’m not about snakes. Nope.
The desert is serene, calming, and inviting and nothing short of magical and absolutely the best choice for this gorgeous’s family session.

The Boss

You know who is the boss during family sessions? Toddlers. Toddlers run the whole show!
We immediately began shooting since toddlers can also be unpredictable. Imagine my surprise when I seen just how fun this guy was while still showing me who was in charge.
We had so much fun, laughing, playing, and I, swooning over his curls and long eye lashes. Why do all the boys get the long eye lashes?
We were having so much fun the sun was setting and the session was over before we knew it.

Hey ya’ll!

I am your Utah Photographer, Candace Castor! Its been so quiet around here I feel like I need a reintroduction!

We were a military family and moved to Tucson October 2016 from Okinawa Japan. After 1.5 years in the hot desert I returned to Northern Utah.

This year has been such a whirlwind and I’m slowly getting caught up.

This year started off my very last semester of grad school! Wahoo! I took 3 classes instead of my normal 2.
In between single parent life and school work I learned I had a very large herniated disc requiring surgery and traveled the west coast for graduation.
I also worked, I have 10-12 sessions to blog! Ill be back dating a lot of these so be sure to check back periodically and check them out!!

Graduation was in San Francisco so we packed up and drove on over there. I visited with my brother, met his wife and my newest niece. Seen a friend I hadn’t see in roughly 5 years and took a few maternity pictures of her. She snapped some cap and gown pictures of me and the kids. My mom made my kids “My mom shoots people” T-shirt that we all thought were super fun (check out her Etsy Shop!). After graduation we headed down to the San Diego area for another visit with friends and a much needed visit to the beach. All those pictures will have their own blog posts soon!!

My diploma showed up the end of July and I cannot get over how pretty it is!!!

Back Surgery happened on August 3 and its a slow recovery process. They said the spine area takes the longest to heal because of the lack of blood flow but I’m looking forward to not being in constant pain anymore.

Pictures! Who doesnt love pictures! …to complete this post, a fun little bit of who I am, what I do, and what I love!

(p.s. dont forget to check out yesterdays post for a fall mini session giveaway!!)
